Meet Cody Hannah
Cody Hannah is a young, working class, LGBTQIA+ student and activist running for the Arizona State House of Representatives in LD-13 with the Arizona Green Party (AZGP). Cody grew up in the City of Tempe, AZ and graduated from McClintock High School in 2016 before moving to the City of Chandler in 2018, where he currently resides. Cody attends Arizona State University, where he is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy with a focus in Sustainability after changing his major from Music Education. He is currently employed as a server in the restaurant industry in the City of Scottsdale.
Cody has been politically active since 2016, and has been an AZGP member and volunteer since 2019. He is a co-founder of AZGP's Youth Caucus and has been previously elected to AZGP's State Committee as an Alternate Delegate to the Green Party of the United States' (GPUS) National Committee, and as a Co-Chairperson of AZGP.
In 2022, Cody ran for office for the first time as a nonpartisan write-in candidate endorsed by AZGP for Chandler, AZ City Council and received nearly 1000 votes without any formal campaign organization or name recognition, and without raising or spending any money- all within the span of two short months. He currently serves as the elected Chairperson of the Green Party of Maricopa County, and as the elected Co-Chairperson of AZGP.
Outside of his involvement in politics, Cody enjoys reading, comedy, cooking, gardening, playing music, being outdoors, and spending quality time with those he cares about, particularly with his pug, Tallulah, his close friends and co-workers, and his family.
What Cody Believes…
Cody's campaign is based around an unwavering commitment to Economic, Environmental, and Social Justice FOR ALL. He believes that our government should be secular, free from foreign and corporate influence, and should prioritize the needs of working families and our environment over short-term profits and economic growth.
If elected, Cody’s legislative priorities will be to fight for bold climate action, protecting and expanding worker's rights, ensuring employers provide livable wages and fair benefits, forcing the wealthy to pay their share of taxes, supporting our public schools and educators, defending reproductive freedom and the right to an abortion, demanding equal rights and protections for the LGBTQIA+ community, ending the failed “war on drugs”, increasing our supplies of affordable and public housing, and supporting free & fair elections in a grassroots, inclusive, and participatory democracy.
Further, Cody believes in guaranteeing universal access to the basic necessities of a dignified modern life to all Arizonans as fundamental human rights, including healthy food, clean water and air, a habitable environment, a lifelong education, quality healthcare, decent and stable housing, high-speed broadband, and gainful employment, as well as opportunities for creative expression, community engagement, and civic participation.
If you are an Arizona voter residing in LD-13 that believes that all people are created equal and are worthy of a decent and comfortable life, that our children and grandchildren deserve to have a habitable planet they can survive and thrive on for generations to come, that our State government should be truly of, by, and for the people of Arizona, and that the broken and corrupt “two-party system” has failed us for far too long, then Cody Hannah is the candidate for you.
why is cody Running as a Write-In candidate in the primaries?
As a newly recognized political party, the Arizona Green Party (AZGP) is entitled by law to a place on the ballot for all legislative, statewide, and federal offices for the 2024 and 2026 general elections (A.R.S. § 16-801). This means that registered Green Party members like Cody who are running for office in the State of Arizona have far fewer barriers to achieving official recognition as candidates, winning their primaries, and advancing to the general election than candidates running with larger political parties like the Democrats, Republicans, and Libertarians that have achieved continuing representation on the ballot on the basis of their number of registered voters (0.67%+ of all registered AZ voters) and/or total vote percentages for applicable qualifying races (5%+ of the total vote for either Governor or President).
By filing to run as a write-in candidate in the primaries rather than as a traditional candidate, Cody and other AZGP candidates can bypass the burdensome signature requirements that are typically necessary to achieve official recognition and qualify for the primary election ballot. Additionally, due to AZGP’s “new party” status and the relatively small number of registered Greens in Arizona compared to the other four recognized political parties, Cody doesn’t have to waste time, funds, and energy collecting signatures or competing in a crowded primary field, and only needs to receive a plurality of write-in votes from registered Greens in the primary election to win and automatically qualify for the November 5th, 2024 general election ballot as the AZ Green Party’s nominee for LD-13 State Representative.
